Many Christian’s have believed the lie that admonishment is a tactic reserved for correction. They believe that they should only be strongly engaged when they have violently veered off course. But John makes it clear that admonishment is the proper tool to help steer a ship so it doesn’t veer off course. This because of the simple fact that sin is always trying to change how true our path is. This doesn’t have to mean that we are in error all the time, but it does mean that we must always configure ourselves with the acknowledgment that our carnal self is always trying to error. We are like a wobbly wheel on its way to the tire shop. One day, we will receive something new, but for now we must constantly adjust our direction. Many confuse sanctification with salvation. They think that because they are saved, the are perfect in application. But in truth salvation doesn’t guarantee a perfect application. Even a perfect Adam still committed sin. Christian’s ought to crave the truth always. They should realize that as dependent and finite creatures, we will always need the word of God to function properly. It’s not about salvation, it’s about sanctification into a being who accepts his need for God holistically.
