LEVITICUS‬ ‭27‬:‭28‬-‭29‬ ‭

““However, anything specially set apart for the Lord—whether a person, an animal, or family property—must never be sold or bought back. Anything devoted in this way has been set apart as holy, and it belongs to the Lord. No person specially set apart for destruction may be bought back. Such a person must be put to death.”

Leviticus‬ ‭27‬:‭28‬-‭29‬ ‭NLT

God does not require our sacrifices but man always wants to give them. These passages represent a means for man to, yet again, understand the importance of their sacrifices. First they need to understand that their sacrifices are costly. Second they need to understand that their sacrifices are symbolic of a price that cannot be paid. Truthfully, there is a way to love God that doesn’t require these rituals. It is a sacrifice of praise. But if one desires to sacrifice, then he must do so in extremely nuanced ways. These ways reflect God, but moreso than this, they also protect man. In this type of sacrifice, man cannot buy God with excess. He cannot establish superiority over another by the price of his sacrifice. He doesn’t actually own what he is sacrificing and so he has no leverage against making such sacrifices. He also cannot claim that he can actually withhold his sacrifices since he doesn’t own them. This effectively creates a constant moving of goods through the daily life of the Israelites that emphasizes to them that God is in control.

Sacrifice’s Meaning: Sacrifices are costly and symbolic, representing the unpayable price, but true love for God doesn’t require rituals.

Sacrifice’s Purpose: Sacrifices reflect God and protect man from excess, superiority claims, and withholding, emphasizing God’s control.

Sacrifice’s Nature: Sacrifices are nuanced, involve giving up what one doesn’t own, and create a constant flow of goods, highlighting God’s sovereignty.
