GENESIS‬ ‭46‬:‭3‬-‭4‬ ‭

““I am God, the God of your father,” the voice said. “Do not be afraid to go down to Egypt, for there I will make your family into a great nation. I will go with you down to Egypt, and I will bring you back again. You will die in Egypt, but Joseph will be with you to close your eyes.””

Genesis‬ ‭46‬:‭3‬-‭4‬ ‭NLT

Jacob had lived for “130 hard years.” During this time, he had been a man who was given a relationship with God. It wasn’t a relationship that he understood or celebrated well. It was a relationship that he often took advantage of and used for his own selfish ambition. Nonetheless, it was a consistent thing in his life. Through it all, Jacob grew from a devious man, to a man of sorrows, and finally into a man of sage wisdom. During this time, and over the course of his whole life, God was there. God sustained him, protected his interests, and honored his promises. This is what gave Jacob what he needed to no longer be one who deceives. In Egypt, he and all he cared about, would be allowed to live out his final moments in great splendor and prosperity, with complete reconciliation, all because, in the end, he allowed God to be his God. For him, Egypt became his exodus story. Entering Egypt was an exit from his past of hardship into a new era that saw him finally at peace. It was a final blessing God gave to him specifically. It would not be the final place of Israel, as they would return to Canaan to fulfill the covenant with Abraham. But it was a place of great joy for Jacob’s final days. God gives his blessings to all kinds. From scoundrel to saint, when we follow him, we too can find peace.
