PSALM‬ ‭54‬:‭1‬-‭7‬ ‭

“Come with great power, O God, and rescue me! Defend me with your might. Listen to my prayer, O God. Pay attention to my plea. For strangers are attacking me; violent people are trying to kill me. They care nothing for God. Interlude But God is my helper. The Lord keeps me alive! May the evil plans of my enemies be turned against them. Do as you promised and put an end to them. I will sacrifice a voluntary offering to you; I will praise your name, O Lord, for it is good. For you have rescued me from my troubles and helped me to triumph over my enemies.”

Scripture, and particularly the Psalms are consistent in presenting that God wants a specific type of sacrifice. Often, and seemingly universally, the common narrative is that blood sacrifice is needed for the payment of sins. And though this is true for absolution, it is not true for favor. The type of sacrifice that God prefers is the unintuitive reorientation toward him that comes from a sacrifice of thanks. This seems trivial compared to the giving of things, but it requires a level of mental ascent and emotional fortitude that few people have. Though many can praise God when things are easy, few are able to praise God when things are difficult. David was a man with many blessings but he was also an incredibly hated man. It would be easy to interpret his life as tumultuous and him as infamous but instead, the factor of consistent praise from his heart, has led to him being spiritually reverred. God himself has chosen that David’s fate be forever intertwined with his own. We ought to see that this blessing is largely because of his attitude in difficult times. Let us also bring a sacrifice of praise amid times of uncertainty, sorrow and even persecution.
