PROVERBS‬ ‭16‬:‭10‬-‭20‬ ‭‬‬

“The king speaks with divine wisdom; he must never judge unfairly. The Lord demands accurate scales and balances; he sets the standards for fairness. A king detests wrongdoing, for his rule is built on justice. The king is pleased with words from righteous lips; he loves those who speak honestly. The anger of the king is a deadly threat; the wise will try to appease it. When the king smiles, there is life; his favor refreshes like a spring rain. How much better to get wisdom than gold, and good judgment than silver! The path of the virtuous leads away from evil; whoever follows that path is safe. Pride goes before destruction, and haughtiness before a fall. Better to live humbly with the poor than to share plunder with the proud. Those who listen to instruction will prosper; those who trust the Lord will be joyful.”

Proverbs‬ ‭16‬:‭10‬-‭20‬ ‭NLT‬‬

As the saying goes, “pride comes before the fall.” This is a statement of intended humility. However, in our collective consciousness, it is rarely couched within the ten verse that it sits. It has a particular context. That context is within the setting of a king’s court. The he idea is that their is a proper power structure that we should abide by. The wise know how to operate within that power structure and flourish. This is done by using it to your advantage. This includes making sure that those at the top of that structure are properly cared for. This is why pride must be controlled. This is, of course, a foreign context to the current vogue. It so our motto to “speak truth to power,” in defiance and to raise that defiant fist at the hegemony. This is foolishness. Their will always be power structures. This is because man was created by an all powerful being and is in his image. But navigating that doesn’t have to be difficult. It can even be productive and pleasant. Jesus modeled this within the Trinity when he put his own will, in Gethsemene, beneath that of the Father’s. This was the sin with whom the Father was well pleased. And he was lifted up and given a place of honor. So too can we be if we are humble.
