““May your eyes be open to my requests and to the requests of your people Israel. May you hear and answer them whenever they cry out to you.”
1 Kings 8:52 NLT
It is important that we know who God is. There are many who come to God I. Supplication without taking into account who he is. They either demand of God as if he is a machine that must do their bidding, or they come in false humility. They try so hard to not offend him that they seemingly rebuke God for the blessings he wishes to bestow. God is neither. Solomon demonstrates, in his opening prayer, that God can be spoken to as one would speak to a person. He is not compelled by threats or pity, and yet, he can be implored on the basis of his own character. This is an appropriate thing to recall at the christening of the temple. The temple is a place where people can meet with God. When they do, they should be aware that he does so by no compulsion. He wishes to be available and to be a blessing upon his beloved creation. As we approach God, we are to hold this in high regard. We are not to set up false worship of a genie or an abuser. We can suplicate based on our appreciation for him and the character that he has presented to us. Recognition of God and interacting with him by the truths revealed is the highest form of worship we can give.
