This passage illustrates a stark difference in the those who know God but do not follow him versus those who know God and do. The generation before this one knew God and God removed them from slavery in Egypt. Yet their lack of faith led them to wander outside their slavery, until in their freedom, they died confused and unable to taste the promise that was given to them. They were commanded to take the land but couldn’t follow God past their own fears and tactical wisdom. They died free, but apart from the blessings. Their children, being vastly outclassed and outnumbered slaughtered this same enemy with ease. Not because they were a better people than their parents, but because they were a more faithful people. Faith in God means victory in the things he promises. The size or the power of the enemy or task will never be the measure of the success of Gods people. We do not need to prepare our steps. We only need to prepare our hearts to be counted in the fight.
