Sometimes, when we have defeated our difficulties we can become discouraged. With all the effort we put in, the things we lost and the narrow margin of victory, it can become easy to forget about that hard won victory. Here we see that Joshua not only defeats the 5 kings but he uses them as a brutal example of victory. This is not simple victory of one’s efforts, but instead, God’s victory. It was a bold and stark example to the leaders, of just how definitive God’s victories can be. They may seem to o happen by a narrow margin, but they are not narrow. They are ensured and debilitating for the enemy. We must remember this when we enter into battle for God. If he calls us to fight, then he will lay his enemies under foot. He will do this with ease, and despite the full force of a coalesced mob. This unholy union was something to never fear before our God. This was a lesson that Israel needed firmly locked in stone. We need to remember it as well.
