““But when this happens, says the Lord of Heaven’s Armies, I will honor you, Zerubbabel son of Shealtiel, my servant. I will make you like a signet ring on my finger, says the Lord, for I have chosen you. I, the Lord of Heaven’s Armies, have spoken!””
Haggai 2:23 NLT
God has chosen many people at many times in such a way and though they are different names and places, they all reflect some strikingly similar characteristics and attitudes. Firstly these people are submissive and honoring to God and the word of God. Secondly, he chooses people who are archetypes for the coming of his messiah. The people he chooses are humble enough to understand and accept a fundamental truth about their choosing… it was never about them. All of these people, in some way are reflections of Christ. It is interesting to note that the covenant made with Zerrubabel never came to pass directly. However, just as David’s throne passed, David’s legacy did not. In fact Zerubabel is part of David’s lineage. Jesus is connected to both men. Because of this, in Christ, God’s promise to Zerubabel was fulfilled. We can always expect that though God is clever in his outcomes, he is always honest and able with his intentions.
