“I will overthrow royal thrones and destroy the power of foreign kingdoms. I will overturn their chariots and riders. The horses will fall, and their riders will kill each other.”
Haggai 2:22 NLT
Who has real power? Power isn’t described in great sweeping movements. Even world changing displays of power, such as the atomic bombs dropped in WWII were not as disturbing as the idea of a pinpointed nuclear attack that would be imagined later. The power of Christ is such a power. It was an unstoppable fact of human history, foretold by the prophets and spoken about openly by God’s people. And yet, the enemy couldn’t comprehend it when it arrived. It was so nuanced that it wasn’t derided for assault it was. Haggai tells the people that God is not only with them, but that he fights for them. From the chariot to the throne, it is God who overthrows and humbled his enemies. We need only remember what true power looks like and who wields it and we shall be at peace and in righteousness. How fitting that God should contain that power in a lowly baby. It is a display of his prowess at navigating true power. Let us do away with the grand standing in our faith and follow Christ into true agency through meekness.
