“But now the Lord says: Be strong, Zerubbabel. Be strong, Jeshua son of Jehozadak, the high priest. Be strong, all you people still left in the land. And now get to work, for I am with you, says the Lord of Heaven’s Armies.”
Haggai 2:4 NLT
When God provides us the context of his presence, it is to create a new default for our hearts, mind and body. It’s purpose is not to bolster old ways of thinking or living but instead to change them so they can be radically different and increasingly reflective of his glory. Too often, believers mistake the call to peace with the idea of “stillness.” To be still is a command referring to our restlessness as finite creatures but it is not a command that addresses agency. As believers, we are to be inspired into a constant motion of creation. Because we know that God is with us, we should be always active. We should his desires, will and blessings as always imminent in our lives. There should always be another task for us to complete and a way to exercise the agency he gives us by his providence. To this end, a believer who knows the peace of God should never be lazy in that peace. As commanded, they are to pick up their cross and follow him. Life should become an active endeavor.
