“At that time the prophets Haggai and Zechariah son of Iddo prophesied to the Jews in Judah and Jerusalem. They prophesied in the name of the God of Israel who was over them. Zerubbabel son of Shealtiel and Jeshua son of Jehozadak responded by starting again to rebuild the Temple of God in Jerusalem. And the prophets of God were with them and helped them.”
Ezra 5:1-2 NLT
There is nothing quite like God’s word for his people. This is precisely the reason why so many have tried to cultivate it, harness it, obscure it or destroy it. It is a power unlike anything that exists in all of human history. It stirs the hearts of men and inspires them into deep and meaningful transformation, despite imminent danger, harm or death. The returning Jews had been invigorated by previous revelation but they lacked new guidance and had become downtrodden in their efforts at restoration. Here we find God sending his voice , once again, to show them the way. Often this is exactly what we need in these dark times. We need the willingness to listen, the hope that our God is not silent, and the will to follow Christ again. The words spoken were not words of self help or meant for personal validation. It is recorded that these prophets returned a dejected people to the voice of God. The cohesive narrative of new prophecy and old revelation always drives the human soul. This is what we must return too as well, the scripture and the guidance of the Holy Spirit. There’s nothing that moves us or guides us quite as much.
