Nehemiah was a phenomenal inspiration to the people. His words and work brought them back into alignment with a lost aspect of their identity. Under Nehemiah, they became a people under God. He exampled for them everything that they needed to stay on track in his presence and continue in Gods favor. Yet, we read that the moment he was away, things began returning to a state of idolatry and disregard for God and his ways. This is a prime example for us of why it is important to have a proper community of faith. Our identity rests in understanding that we are God’s people, but beyond this, we must act that way too. Nehemiah acted as a mark of counsel for the people. He helped them, in community to, not only understate it identity, but also lean into it. Nehemiah was spirit driven and scripture informed, quoting it all day long. For us, this is to be the function of a pastor, a father and a husband. We must always keep watch for the follies of our past, and push for righteousness, by God’s standard, lest the people we love destroy the community we love again.
