God had given Nehemiah a calling. With boldness, cunning and patience, Nehemiah entered into that calling, by waiting upon God. Now the reality of that calling faced a greater challenge. As if it was the ultimate irony, the walls were closing in on Nehemiah as he was building them up. He was at a cross roads, of sorts, that should be familiar to anyone in ministry. There are the days when we dream of the possibilities of following God and we easily see his hand. These days inspire many to serve and to give him glory. And then there are also the dark and heavy days when the world closes in and openly wants to destroy you. These are the sleepless times where the men carry weapons in one hand and tools in the other. In either case, as with Nehemiah, when the wall is half built and we are tired, we must remember that God is there, that he is not silent, that his call was true and that his blessings are worth the struggles. Even in dark days, let us continue our vigilance.
