“speaking of these things in all of his letters. Some of his comments are hard to understand, and those who are ignorant and unstable have twisted his letters to mean something quite different, just as they do with other parts of Scripture. And this will result in their destruction.”
2 Peter 3:16 NLT
This curious passage of scripture alludes to some really interesting things. Firstly scripture can be difficult to understand. The key to understanding it, however, lies in its simplicity. Of one has to twist previously held doctrine to understand something, this is a sure sign that the new understanding is a false teaching. Second, it shows a solidarity of teaching in the earth church. It is clear that Paul was viewed by Peter, arguably the most famous Apostle, as in solidarity with them and the gospel. He literally calls Paul’s writings scripture, in line with the rest of Scripture. This isn’t because Peter had a Bible. It’s because Paul’s writings passed the Apostle’s litmus test on what was scripture or not. This is how Paul’s writings became a part of the Bible. This fact and it’s implied solidarity of the early church have an extreme significance that cannot be understated and should not be overlooked. We should follow Peter’s example when considering what to adopt in our lives.
