“And when people escape from the wickedness of the world by knowing our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ and then get tangled up and enslaved by sin again, they are worse off than before. It would be better if they had never known the way to righteousness than to know it and then reject the command they were given to live a holy life. They prove the truth of this proverb: “A dog returns to its vomit.” And another says, “A washed pig returns to the mud.””
2 Peter 2:20-22 NLT
Adam and Eve sinned without knowing the implications of their actions. In this way they were “simple sinners.” They were perfectly naive and inexperienced in consequence and the meaning of their own agency in the world. When post Eden humans sin, we are “sin slaves.” We have watched our parents and every generation before them live in a sin filled world. Because of this, our sin is semi-navigable. Every action leads to death, but we can manipulate the process of getting there to lead fairly comfortable lives. Peter is referring to a different category of sinner. He is speaking of the “intellectual sinner.” This is someone who chooses sin, even while understanding its consequences, and being freed from its slavery because of their relationship with Christ. For these people, there is a special place of judgement. They were not conscripted into Satan’s war against God, as were all the children of Adam. They have chosen to betray God and thus assume the consequences of those who do.
