“Their destruction is their reward for the harm they have done. They love to indulge in evil pleasures in broad daylight. They are a disgrace and a stain among you. They delight in deception even as they eat with you in your fellowship meals. They commit adultery with their eyes, and their desire for sin is never satisfied. They lure unstable people into sin, and they are well trained in greed. They live under God’s curse. They have wandered off the right road and followed the footsteps of Balaam son of Beor, who loved to earn money by doing wrong. But Balaam was stopped from his mad course when his donkey rebuked him with a human voice.”
2 Peter 2:13-16 NLT
There are marks to a false teacher that are unmistakable and they are not what many Christians have come to believe. Many believers see false teachers as one who secretly indulge in dark passions while under the pretenses of the gospel. They are concerned with how they can be expected to spot such people. The truth is that the category of a false teacher is reserved for a special brand of demonic influencer. They are marked by their brazen and unabashed disregard for things of the Spirit. Where there is to be self control, they promote lust. Where it should be love for others, they promote greed and ambition. Where it should be gospel, they promote self truth. These people are easy to identify if one can look past the truth that they are able to live amongst believers because they are openly existing in the soft spot we have for own sin nature. How did these false teachers come to be in our gatherings? We let them in. Peter warns us that their toxicity breeds destruction. We must be discerning.
