1 JOHN 2:17

“And this world is fading away, along with everything that people crave. But anyone who does what pleases God will live forever.”

1 John 2:17

This simple passage speaks volumes about our Christian hope. The search for meaning is the search that every matured human being undertakes at some point. As John noted the various lusts earlier, he really brought light to the various ways in which man seeks meaning. Honestly, without revelation, there is no meaningful answer. But God’s revealed truth and plan in Jesus gives us meaning. He makes it so that we can meaningfully accept death in our narrative, but also look to eternal life. Christian’s can hope. Our pursuits can now mean more than anything we could give them by extension of our own powers. This is because they are attached to the work and ways of an infinite God. His work doesn’t, by nature, fade into obscurity. In him our lusts can be transformed into loves. Lusts will extinguish the object of their attention but love will cultivate it. What was intended as a romantic fling can be transformed into a robust family that becomes the fertile ground for whole generations of believers. In this, their is meaningful hope in a fallen and fleeting world.
