““There is no one like the God of Israel. He rides across the heavens to help you, across the skies in majestic splendor. The eternal God is your refuge, and his everlasting arms are under you. He drives out the enemy before you; he cries out, ‘Destroy them!’ So Israel will live in safety, prosperous Jacob in security, in a land of grain and new wine, while the heavens drop down dew. How blessed you are, O Israel! Who else is like you, a people saved by the Lord? He is your protecting shield and your triumphant sword! Your enemies will cringe before you, and you will stomp on their backs!””
Deuteronomy 33:26-29 NLT
There is a type of blessing that is merely proverbial. This is important to note and acknowledge. It is a type of general blessing in the same way that revelation can be general. But the blessings of God are not proverbial. They are real events that happened in real time and real space with real meaning. God intends his blessings to be special in the same way that revelation can be special. They are not intended to be mere feelings, but rather true experiences. Gods blessings create feelings rather than inspire them. In fact, most of the time God’s blessings are accompanied by a feeling of panic and a command to not fear. Those who do not fear and overcome their inclination to do so, then experience a meaningful event in real space and time. Here Moses describes God is such a fashion. He describes him as the one who goes before the Israelites in all their peril. This implies that we must step forward to gain the blessing. It shows the inversion from our human ideas of what a blessing is. A blessing is a three part thing. First it is the grace of God going before us and the invitation to join him in an event. Then it is the event itself. Lastly it is the insight of feeling and wisdom gained in post. Let us do more than feel.
Nature of God’s Blessings: Real events, not mere feelings, occurring in real time and space with real meaning.
Experiencing God’s Blessings: Requires stepping forward, overcoming fear, and participating in the event to gain insight and wisdom.
Components of a Blessing: God’s grace leading, the event itself, and the insight gained afterward.
