““So commit yourselves wholeheartedly to these words of mine. Tie them to your hands and wear them on your forehead as reminders. Teach them to your children. Talk about them when you are at home and when you are on the road, when you are going to bed and when you are getting up. Write them on the doorposts of your house and on your gates, so that as long as the sky remains above the earth, you and your children may flourish in the land the Lord swore to give your ancestors.”
Deuteronomy 11:18-21 NLT
Cultural Christianity is a problem. It pretends to be real relationship with God, but is instead a relationship with traditions. It isn’t accessible history. This isn’t to say that history shouldn’t be a part of Christianity, far from it. Rather, it is the responsibility for every new culture in Christianity to sustain the life of the old one by transfer of ideas and not just events. The scripture is filled with events, but also ideas. These ideas come in the form of proverbs, poetry, law and epistles, and each of them has modern application as well as the case study of history. A parent has a responsibility to discuss this modern application with every opportunity. Moses calls this a wholehearted commitment one must make. A parent isn’t to simply inform. He is to inspire and spur discussion on these things holistically. He is to permutate them and apply them to modern events. This happens on such a nuanced level that is happening at bed, at work and even at the dinner table. This is what Christ did for his disciples, gathering scriptures to parse alongside the daily tasks of fishing, farming and fealty to Rome. Doing this is the crux of flourishing in this life and remaining faithful until the next one for our families.
Cultural Christianity Issue: Pretends to be a relationship with God but is actually a relationship with traditions.
Importance of Historical Context: History should be part of Christianity, but new cultures need to transfer ideas, not just events, from the past.
Parental Responsibility: Parents should discuss the modern application of biblical ideas with their children, inspiring and encouraging discussion in everyday life.
