“Go yourself and listen to what the Lord our God says. Then come and tell us everything he tells you, and we will listen and obey.’ “The Lord heard the request you made to me. And he said, ‘I have heard what the people said to you, and they are right. Oh, that they would always have hearts like this, that they might fear me and obey all my commands! If they did, they and their descendants would prosper forever. Go and tell them, “Return to your tents.” But you stand here with me so I can give you all my commands, decrees, and regulations. You must teach them to the people so they can obey them in the land I am giving them as their possession.’” So Moses told the people, “You must be careful to obey all the commands of the Lord your God, following his instructions in every detail. Stay on the path that the Lord your God has commanded you to follow. Then you will live long and prosperous lives in the land you are about to enter and occupy.”
Deuteronomy 5:27-33 NLT
There is an inappropriate trend that has permeated the people of God and that is a complete reliance on one’s own memory and interpretation of God. There is an a phenomenon that people desire to keep God separate and holy, but in doing so relegate him to being aloof and impersonal. In truth, God is neither aloof nor impersonal. This is because he is holy but he does not separate himself from us. People do this to excuse themselves from his law and its requirements. They tell the story that God has not truly nor directly intervened for meaningful change in our lives. The repetition of the ten commandments elucidates the point that God wants us to remember. God wants relationship and he wants it to be personal and meaningful. It is also specific and directed at areas that are for our benefit. They must be upheld and viewed as a holistic and interconnected system for blessing, rather than a series of disconnected parts that can be picked over and picked from. We must be constantly reminded of the fact that these truths are constant truths in our lives and not just the rules of our parents.
God’s Nature: God is holy but not aloof or impersonal; God desires a personal and meaningful relationship with humanity.
The Ten Commandments: God wants people to remember the Ten Commandments, which are a holistic and interconnected system for blessing.
Human Tendency: People often separate God from their lives to excuse themselves from God’s law and its requirements.
