“At the Lord’s direction, Moses kept a written record of their progress. These are the stages of their march, identified by the different places where they stopped along the way.”
Numbers 33:2 NLT
Moses was old and tired. God had already told him that his time was drawing to an end. He had been given the monumental task of moving the family of Jacob out of Egypt. He had also been given the task of transforming those people into a nation and installing God, and his systems, and leaders into authority into their pagan lives. Though most of those who left Egypt were dead, remnants of their previous lives still remained. If Moses died, they would need a unifying story to tell their descendants about how they became so curious among the other nations. God is forward thinking. He cares about the legacy of his creation in space and time. He cares that ideas and blessings make logical sense in causal reality. The text is clear that Moses wrote down what happened to provide this clarity. But it’s also clear that it was done at the direction of God. His writing was inspired. God helped him frame and execute the narrative that would be transferred through the generations, so that their work might be preserved among the nation. We should take great peace from the fact that God doesn’t just interact with us in one fixed moment, but that he allows us the blessing of a cohesive transcendent story that he, himself, has maintained through the inspiration of his scripture.
Moses’s Legacy: Moses wrote down the history of the Israelites to provide a unifying story for future generations.
God’s Inspiration: God guided Moses in writing the narrative to ensure its accuracy and preservation.
God’s Transcendent Story: God cares about the legacy of His creation and maintains a cohesive story throughout time.
