“If any of the meat from the peace offering is eaten on the third day, the person who presented it will not be accepted by the Lord. You will receive no credit for offering it. By then the meat will be contaminated; if you eat it, you will be punished for your sin. “Meat that touches anything ceremonially unclean may not be eaten; it must be completely burned up. The rest of the meat may be eaten, but only by people who are ceremonially clean. If you are ceremonially unclean and you eat meat from a peace offering that was presented to the Lord, you will be cut off from the community. If you touch anything that is unclean (whether it is human defilement or an unclean animal or any other unclean, detestable thing) and then eat meat from a peace offering presented to the Lord, you will be cut off from the community.””
Leviticus 7:18-21 NLT
The offering of peace is an offering of reconciliation and it is meant to serve the function of bringing people back together. This is the default position under God’s law and should be noted and celebrated as such. There is no peace when this sacrifice serves to separate people. It is a sacrifice that is done with haste and with just as much intent and dynamic messaging as the other sacrifices. Alongside the typical elements of ritual cleansing, we have the added fact that the meat can partaken overtime, but not so long that it becomes rotten. This is a true testament and allusion to the nature of resolution. When we seek to rectify issues, we must consummate that effort or it will eventually fester and rot again. Everything else must be given to the Lord. It must be handled in a way that only those who have already been ritually cleansed personally may partake in it. This is highlighted by Jesus teaching, in the New Testament, that one should leave his sacrifice at the altar and reconcile with his brother, before trying to resolve his own sins. It is a needful truth in the Christian life. We cannot hope to be forgiven unless we first forgive. It must be done with purity in our hearts and with haste in our steps.
Peace Offering’s Purpose: To reconcile people and bring them back together, not to separate them.
Peace Offering’s Significance: A sacrifice that requires timely resolution, symbolizing the need to address conflicts promptly to prevent them from festering.
Peace Offering’s Participation: Limited to those ritually cleansed, emphasizing the importance of personal purity and forgiveness in the reconciliation process.
