“So Moses summoned Bezalel and Oholiab and all the others who were specially gifted by the Lord and were eager to get to work. Moses gave them the materials donated by the people of Israel as sacred offerings for the completion of the sanctuary. But the people continued to bring additional gifts each morning. Finally the craftsmen who were working on the sanctuary left their work. They went to Moses and reported, “The people have given more than enough materials to complete the job the Lord has commanded us to do!” So Moses gave the command, and this message was sent throughout the camp: “Men and women, don’t prepare any more gifts for the sanctuary. We have enough!” So the people stopped bringing their sacred offerings. Their contributions were more than enough to complete the whole project.”
Exodus 36:2-7 NLT
God loves a cheerful giver. He wants people to bring him what they can, because they can. But he doesn’t need this from people. He wishes this from people because it illustrates the nature and polarity of his character. Specifically, it shows how he is generous, vulnerable and self sacrificial. However, like all human touched things, this can be and often is exploited by men. As people give freely and out of love, men can use this to sap every blessing that person might have. It is a sad truth that many church leaders lead lavish lives by storing the blessings of their congregants in excess of their needs. Perhaps this is the number one detractor from organized religion itself, that pastors are rich while their congregation is starving. Here we see a simple safe guard against such atrocities. Moses tells the people to stop giving because there is too much. This is an important truth which has been predicated over a long period of time following God in his providence. Specifically, the people have been taught through everyday providence that God provides everyday. His providence can be invested, but it can’t be stored or hoarded. To do this is to bring plagues. It is a simple rule but an important one. Only take what is needed. God will continue to provide if there is more needed later.
God’s Desire for Giving: God desires cheerful giving from people, reflecting His generous, vulnerable, and self-sacrificial nature.
Exploitation of Giving: Humans can exploit the act of giving, using it to take advantage of others’ blessings.
Consequence of Hoarding: Hoarding blessings, instead of using them wisely, can lead to plagues and is against God’s will.
