EXODUS‬ ‭15‬:‭11‬-‭18‬ ‭

““Who is like you among the gods, O Lord— glorious in holiness, awesome in splendor, performing great wonders? You raised your right hand, and the earth swallowed our enemies. “With your unfailing love you lead the people you have redeemed. In your might, you guide them to your sacred home. The peoples hear and tremble; anguish grips those who live in Philistia. The leaders of Edom are terrified; the nobles of Moab tremble. All who live in Canaan melt away; terror and dread fall upon them. The power of your arm makes them lifeless as stone until your people pass by, O Lord, until the people you purchased pass by. You will bring them in and plant them on your own mountain— the place, O Lord, reserved for your own dwelling, the sanctuary, O Lord, that your hands have established. The Lord will reign forever and ever!””

Exodus‬ ‭15‬:‭11‬-‭18‬ ‭NLT

God is holy. There is no other that is like him. There is nothing as powerful and there is no one as sovereign. Since Adam set foot from the garden of Eden, this concept has been challenged. It has been challenged by men and fallen angels alike. It is not incredibly notable that man is a creature that worships, but since he has learned to challenge his creator, it is noteworthy when he worships him instead of any other thing. Due to God’s nature and the rebellion against its truth that reverberated out from Eden, all worship must note this about God. It must be a statement about his difference and superiority. It cannot be merely recognition of his character. It must be a declaration that his character is other. The escape from Egypt was God’s unbreakable touchstone for this type of worship. It was a moment where God didn’t merely declare his glory amongst those who had rebelled. He demonstrated it. It was the moment where he finally took on the braggadociousness of his enemies with a statement that cannot be undone. This event is a worship touchstone. It puts God’s otherness into a context. Even the world’s greatest power, with its most powerful army and pantheon of gods, will fail mightily before the hand of YHWH.

God’s Nature: God is holy, powerful, and sovereign, with no equal.

Worship of God: Worship must acknowledge God’s otherness and superiority, not just recognize His character.

Exodus as a Worship Touchstone: The Exodus demonstrates God’s power and otherness, showing that even the world’s greatest power cannot stand against Him.
