“From that time on, Esau hated Jacob because their father had given Jacob the blessing. And Esau began to scheme: “I will soon be mourning my father’s death. Then I will kill my brother, Jacob.” But Rebekah heard about Esau’s plans. So she sent for Jacob and told him, “Listen, Esau is consoling himself by plotting to kill you. So listen carefully, my son. Get ready and flee to my brother, Laban, in Haran. Stay there with him until your brother cools off. When he calms down and forgets what you have done to him, I will send for you to come back. Why should I lose both of you in one day?””
Genesis 27:41-45 NLT
Rebekah had been scheming to direct Jacob for his whole life. It is clear that she felt that she had to make this final choice or she would lose both her sons. Esau would kill the Jacob. Beyond this, his murder would be driven by his hatred for Rebekah, who betrayed him. Instead of talking it through with Isaac and Esau, she leans into her deceit. She decides to manipulate again. Her premise was that by sending Jacob to her family, she could protect him and control him. Yet, we see that this is not the outcome. Beyond this, she never does receive him back and she never patches her relationship with Esau. This is precisely how sin works to destroy us. It taints our thinking until we destroy our own worlds through twisted thinking and paranoia. Had Rebekah shared the prophecy with Isaac and been a peacemaker between her sons, reconciliation might have happened. Instead, their entire family is left separated and alone. Nonetheless, God’s hand continues to be on Abraham’s descendants and his will will be fulfilled, despite the chaos.
