GENESIS‬ ‭9‬:‭22‬-‭25‬ ‭

“Ham, the father of Canaan, saw that his father was naked and went outside and told his brothers. Then Shem and Japheth took a robe, held it over their shoulders, and backed into the tent to cover their father. As they did this, they looked the other way so they would not see him naked. When Noah woke up from his stupor, he learned what Ham, his youngest son, had done. Then he cursed Canaan, the son of Ham: “May Canaan be cursed! May he be the lowest of servants to his relatives.””

Genesis‬ ‭9‬:‭22‬-‭25‬ ‭NLT

What should we do about the story of Noah, Ham and Canaan. The difficulty that has plagued this passage is the fact that it’s simple reading doesn’t seem to justify the strong response from Noah to Canaan. Especially because Canaan wasn’t involved in the incident in the simple reading. Many scholars have reconciled this by noting that there is precedent for believing that Ham committed sexual misconduct during this time. It could have been with Noah or his wife. The belief is that a power play was at work and that Ham was trying to assert dominance. If so, it would then make sense to curse Canaan to keep power flowing through the channels that respected Noah, namely Shem and Japheth. There is also the element of exposition as Moses is explaining why it makes sense to take Canaan. It should be noted that they were a sexually lascivious people. Whatever it may be, we do know a simple premise. We should not expose the faults of our parents for the sake of entertainment. It is the most simple reading of the text. This is seen as an act of rebellion against God and can have grave consequences for the future of our descendants.
