PSALM‬ ‭134‬:‭1‬-‭3‬ ‭

“Oh, praise the Lord, all you servants of the Lord, you who serve at night in the house of the Lord. Lift your hands toward the sanctuary, and praise the Lord. May the Lord, who made heaven and earth, bless you from Jerusalem.”

Psalms‬ ‭134‬:‭1‬-‭3‬ ‭NLT

It is an easy thing to praise God when one does not serve him. Those who do not choose to live under his command but still reap the benefits of his blessings often do so in times of duress. Those who are romantic in orientation often praise God the way a school boy or girl fawns over their crush. Many in our modern Christianity praise God rather mindlessly with mindless contemporary Christian hymns to match. Yet, the psalmist calls for a different type of praise. He calls for the dedicated to praise God. He calls for those who serve him, even at night to praise God. He calls for them to not be so enmeshed in their relationship, that they forget to find awe in who they are with. This is not simply a reminder. It is a good reminder and it is a command for any who might have become cynical as they see the inner workings of the church. Truthfully, all the politics and theological concepts and all the ugliness involved with in doing God’s work often will disenfranchise believers. The only way to stay pure is to continue to find yourself in awe of God as you once did. It is to continually take the time to re-up your affection for him and let all the other things you experience be apart from who he is.
