“Lord, my heart is not proud; my eyes are not haughty. I don’t concern myself with matters too great or too awesome for me to grasp. Instead, I have calmed and quieted myself, like a weaned child who no longer cries for its mother’s milk. Yes, like a weaned child is my soul within me. O Israel, put your hope in the Lord— now and always.”
Psalms 131:1-3 NLT
Where is our hope? Too often, because of the blessings of enlightenment that a relationship with God gives us, we can quickly become delusional about ourselves. Our narrative swiftly shifts to modern fixations of self empowerment and manifest destiny. There are many faith based directives that enforce the idea that we ought to be a self sustainer. These ideas exist well in the blessings of abundant providence that living in God’s care creates. Yet these ideas often lead to depression and listlessness. Like in the story of the prodigal son, it can become easy to forget that our father’s safety isn’t owed to us or created by us. Even if we are given his inheritance by blessing, we squander it without his wisdom and guidance. David presents another option. It is a simple way to live in God’s blessings. It is simply to live calmly in the faithful knowledge of God’s providence. This is not a modern faith that is restless and always looking for a way to consume more of God’s blessings. It is not powered by fear of missing out. Instead it is a quiet and calm faith that is completely removed from hyper vigilant worry. We must shed the idea that a strong Christian is a restless one. A mature believer is not easily phased by the storm.
