“How joyful are those who fear the Lord— all who follow his ways! You will enjoy the fruit of your labor. How joyful and prosperous you will be! Your wife will be like a fruitful grapevine, flourishing within your home. Your children will be like vigorous young olive trees as they sit around your table. That is the Lord’s blessing for those who fear him. May the Lord continually bless you from Zion. May you see Jerusalem prosper as long as you live. May you live to enjoy your grandchildren. May Israel have peace!”
Psalms 128:1-6 NLT
We often hear that “fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom.” But we don’t often hear is that “fear of the Lord is the beginning of blessing.” Generally the concept of fearing God is proffered as a means to the end of proper life application. Doing so brings about a life that is navigable. In many ways, it could be said that fearing God simply makes life easier. This by extension can be seen as better. Here we see a direct application of that idea. Borrowing from the ideas of the previous chapter, we see that the way in which God prospers his people is through family. Family fulfills the image of God within a man by physically resembling it. But after the fall, family became a difficulty. They were ashamed of their nakedness and Adam had blamed Eve after sinning. Beyond this, Eve was now cursed with difficulty in child rearing. God protected this family by declaring that redemption would be through the offspring. This meant that Adam and Eve’s only hope was to protect their children by staying together and good stewardship. Fear of the Lord is now proffered as a way of doing just that. It creates a strong family made of strong children and a strong spouse. It ensures that the family is a redemptive experience for all. Therefore, all in the family should practice it.
