“Those who trust in the Lord are as secure as Mount Zion; they will not be defeated but will endure forever. Just as the mountains surround Jerusalem, so the Lord surrounds his people, both now and forever. The wicked will not rule the land of the godly, for then the godly might be tempted to do wrong. O Lord, do good to those who are good, whose hearts are in tune with you. But banish those who turn to crooked ways, O Lord. Take them away with those who do evil. May Israel have peace!”
Psalms 125:1-5 NLT
The psalmist calls for the Lord to do good to those whose hearts are in tune with God. In a world of nuanced theology, one’s righteousness can be scrutinized and debated. Indeed, it is easily found that no one’s heart is in tune with God. Not one person is righteous. Yet, there are moments where this would seem untrue. David, Noah, Enoch and Abraham were all humans who were deemed righteous. They were in step with God, in Enoch’s case, literally. Yet we also know that some of them were profoundly flawed. This leads us to remember that being in step with God is not about competing with him. It is about staying in his shadow. It is about accepting his provision. Here the psalmist likens this to being embraced by God the way the mountains surround Jerusalem. The mountains protect the city from the weather as well as intruders. They provide the best climate for natural abundance of agricultural resources. A city need only want to thrive to succeed there, as opposed to a place like the desert or the tundra. To be in tune with him is to stay in his embrace where it is safe. Here, righteousness is a natural byproduct. One need not bring his own. We ought to seek to go to there. We ought to seek to live in his embrace.
