PSALM‬ ‭124‬:‭1‬-‭8‬ ‭

“What if the Lord had not been on our side? Let all Israel repeat: What if the Lord had not been on our side when people attacked us? They would have swallowed us alive in their burning anger. The waters would have engulfed us; a torrent would have overwhelmed us. Yes, the raging waters of their fury would have overwhelmed our very lives. Praise the Lord, who did not let their teeth tear us apart! We escaped like a bird from a hunter’s trap. The trap is broken, and we are free! Our help is from the Lord, who made heaven and earth.”

Psalms‬ ‭124‬:‭1‬-‭8‬ ‭NLT

What do we rejoice in? Do we only rejoice when things go our way. David’s psalm is a praise of providence in defeat. He likens Israel to a bird who was not torn apart in a narrow escape from a trap. For many, providence is only recognized when the outcome is better than neutral. This means that the cost to an individual provides a net blessing. Most would never recognize providence in an accident that left them permanently disfigured. They would never recognize God’s providence in an altercation that left them broken. They would never see God’s hand in spite of ongoing physical abuse. Yet, David praise God in the midst of life’s difficulties. He understands that the. Write of life is not neutral at all. He affirms, with this psalm, that the proper outlook is that man always suffers a net loss in life without God. Bad things to happen to good people. Suffering and death is all there is. Yet, we as a creature hope for the idea that there is more. In God, there is more. Any positive, amidst the backdrop of suffering and death, is because God loves us. He interferes and intervenes in our downward spiral with little blessings so that we don’t have to bear the full wages of our sins and Adam’s. This is truly a reason to give God praise.
