PSALM‬ ‭120‬:‭1‬-‭7‬ ‭

“I took my troubles to the Lord; I cried out to him, and he answered my prayer. Rescue me, O Lord, from liars and from all deceitful people. O deceptive tongue, what will God do to you? How will he increase your punishment? You will be pierced with sharp arrows and burned with glowing coals. How I suffer in far-off Meshech. It pains me to live in distant Kedar. I am tired of living among people who hate peace. I search for peace; but when I speak of peace, they want war!”

Psalms‬ ‭120‬:‭1‬-‭7‬ ‭NLT

James calls the tongue a restless evil capable of great destruction. Perhaps he was thinking of this psalm as he was lamenting. Here we see the psalmist make a curious connection. He hates the lie but does not blame the liar so much as blames the tongue. Though a seemingly benign connection, he latches on to a profound truth about humanity. We are largely controlled by sin. A large portion of our efforts are put toward battling against a constant onslaught of attacks, not from without, but without. In terms of the nature of sin, one of the simplest ways in which it manifests is through the tongue. It is a liscivious creature. What it exports is often loose, filthy and vile. Whether it is under control is one of the main indicators of spiritual health. As the scriptures say, what goes out of the mouth defiles him. Yet, we must also pay attention to what it imports. It was the original importer of sin. Its appetite is what made sin so appealing in Eden. It is how Jacob stole Esau’s birthright. The tongue is dangerous to humanity. It is perhaps the most rotten of all parts on the body and in need of the most sanctification.
