PSALM‬ ‭100‬:‭1‬-‭5‬ ‭

“Shout with joy to the Lord, all the earth! Worship the Lord with gladness. Come before him, singing with joy. Acknowledge that the Lord is God! He made us, and we are his. We are his people, the sheep of his pasture. Enter his gates with thanksgiving; go into his courts with praise. Give thanks to him and praise his name. For the Lord is good. His unfailing love continues forever, and his faithfulness continues to each generation.”

The Bible exists to speak to a curious juxtaposition of the internal and the external man. In this way we see that our faith and traditions are more than one or the other, they are wholistic in nature. Jesus taught that our salvation was to be a holistic salvation as well, and that our defilement had implications beyond what we could see or what spilled out from us. Likewise, our sanctification and supplication are also holistic processes. The Holy Spirit is both a force acting within and without. It then follows that our worship would mirror this pervasive scope. Here we see the distinct and consistent call to worship with thanksgiving in our hearts. We are called to be glad while we praise. This seems to be obvious, but the command is there because it is not intuitive. Many simply go through the motions of worship without the elements of thanksgiving and gladness. Here we see that God is deserving of a holistic worship from his creation. Yet we also see that the thanksgiving is part of a mental ascent to his specific actions. We are called to acknowledge that he is God and that he has been faithful through generations. Worship requires memory and hope. We can use these things to spur a holistic time of praise.
