PSALM‬ ‭70‬:‭1‬-‭5‬ ‭

“Please, God, rescue me! Come quickly, Lord, and help me. May those who try to kill me be humiliated and put to shame. May those who take delight in my trouble be turned back in disgrace. Let them be horrified by their shame, for they said, “Aha! We’ve got him now!” But may all who search for you be filled with joy and gladness in you. May those who love your salvation repeatedly shout, “God is great!” But as for me, I am poor and needy; please hurry to my aid, O God. You are my helper and my savior; O Lord, do not delay.”

Psalms‬ ‭70‬:‭1‬-‭5‬ ‭NLT

What need should David have of God’s salvation? Yet, despite his rightful role as king, he presents himself as being poor and needy. He presents himself as a beggar before the true king who knows that the only real power is in the hands of God and not in his own prowess or authority. It is notable that despite this, he comes boldly before God, as he recognizes that though God is the only one with real power and rightful authority, he is also a moral God from whom justice is derived and salvation flows. Our desperate prayers should be the same. No matter our difficulty, we ought to be oriented toward singing his praises and be hopeful for that inevitable end regardless of the difficulties. Likewise, we ought also to account for God’s sovereignty and majesty in our view of ourselves. Before men we may be kings but before God, ontologically speaking, we are mere paupers. Let the two concepts marry as a bold, yet humble praise in the face of adversity.
