“Declare me innocent, O God! Defend me against these ungodly people. Rescue me from these unjust liars. For you are God, my only safe haven. Why have you tossed me aside? Why must I wander around in grief, oppressed by my enemies? Send out your light and your truth; let them guide me. Let them lead me to your holy mountain, to the place where you live. There I will go to the altar of God, to God—the source of all my joy. I will praise you with my harp, O God, my God! Why am I discouraged? Why is my heart so sad? I will put my hope in God! I will praise him again— my Savior and my God!”
Psalms 43:1-5 NLT
Mankind was meant to receive inputs. This is his strength in that it allows him to not be a static creature. He is malleable and adaptable and can be continually programmed. Yet, it also makes him vulnerable and capable of being easily exploited. In Eden God made the environment and the structure of the garden to make it so man’s reliance upon input stayed from him alone. Yet, Satan defied this system by exploiting one of the animals. His first recorded act was to challenge this idea of God’s input. He did this by creating doubt about God’s truth and word. The effects of his manipulation are still felt to this day. It is difficult when so many inputs are seeking dominance. Christians are to learn to listen for God’s truth alone. One of the primary ways Satan hurts us is by bombarding our environment with a barrage of lies. The Psalmist pleads, as should we, for the clarity of Gods input. We often try to seek more inputs to get the best results. But the Psalmist cuts through the din to point out that the only necessary input is the true one. They understand that its goal is one of praise. It is the truth that leads us back to a state of worship and to the Holy God. We ought to use this compass in difficult times as well.
