PSALM‬ ‭14‬:‭1‬-‭7‬ ‭‬‬

”Only fools say in their hearts, “There is no God.” They are corrupt, and their actions are evil; not one of them does good! The Lord looks down from heaven on the entire human race; he looks to see if anyone is truly wise, if anyone seeks God. But no, all have turned away; all have become corrupt. No one does good, not a single one! Will those who do evil never learn? They eat up my people like bread and wouldn’t think of praying to the Lord. Terror will grip them, for God is with those who obey him. The wicked frustrate the plans of the oppressed, but the Lord will protect his people. Who will come from Mount Zion to rescue Israel? When the Lord restores his people, Jacob will shout with joy, and Israel will rejoice.“

Psalms‬ ‭14‬:‭1‬-‭7‬ ‭NLT‬‬

Psalm 14 presents a difficult conundrum. It clearly states that man is foolish for saying in his heart that there is no god. And it also states that no one searches for god. If this is the state of men, then he is doomed to be foolish and corrupt and without good. One might ask how it is that anyone has a relationship with God, if no one seeks him. To answer this question, we have to acknowledge one simple fact. The passage notes that no one seeks God, but it doesn’t note that nobody knows God. Clearly people know of God but they run from him. The first time we see this is in Eden. Here, directly after sinning, we see man hiding from God. Paul elaborates on this when he notes that we suppress the knowledge of God that we have. So how is it then possible to have a relationship with us at all? The answer is found in Genesis as well. Despite the fact that man doesn’t pursue God, God pursues man. How many responds to this pursuit dictates his experience with God. Mostly, as with Adam, man’s response requires law and sacrifices. Sometimes, as with Enoch or Abraham, it doesn’t. Either way, the relationship with God can be had, not because of man, but because of God. Those who disavow God have destroyed any chance of accepting this. Because of that, they truly are utter fools.
