PSALM‬ ‭12‬:‭1‬-‭8‬ ‭

”Help, O Lord, for the godly are fast disappearing! The faithful have vanished from the earth! Neighbors lie to each other, speaking with flattering lips and deceitful hearts. May the Lord cut off their flattering lips and silence their boastful tongues. They say, “We will lie to our hearts’ content. Our lips are our own—who can stop us?” The Lord replies, “I have seen violence done to the helpless, and I have heard the groans of the poor. Now I will rise up to rescue them, as they have longed for me to do.” The Lord’s promises are pure, like silver refined in a furnace, purified seven times over. Therefore, Lord, we know you will protect the oppressed, preserving them forever from this lying generation, even though the wicked strut about, and evil is praised throughout the land.“

Psalms‬ ‭12‬:‭1‬-‭8‬ ‭NLT

God has a relationship with the truth. It is so strong that to be his enemy is to affiliate with lies. This is a main facet of being in rebellion and it all starts with a lie about yourself and your relationship to him. The wicked lie that they can be, or should be like God. Truth is very important. It is by truth that we confess. It is in truth that we repent. It is for truth that we proclaim the gospel message. We preserve our sacred relationships by telling the truth. This is true in admonition, as much as it is in praise. A Christian should hate lies because they love truth. This is a fundamental aspect of being a child of God. It should make it difficult to live in the world as the world’s infrastructure is padded by a lying competition. David’s psalm gives us hope for a future where lying is eradicated. When this day comes, it will end all wickedness, from familial to national as everything becomes reconciled in meaning and outworking. No one will fight because they will be telling the truth of how we ought to love. It is a powerful idea and goal and it is one God’s people ought to hope for. They can begin that process in small pockets by making a clear path for their life that loves truth and avoids deceit. Let it be so.
