MATTHEW‬ ‭26‬:‭52‬-‭54‬ ‭

”“Put away your sword,” Jesus told him. “Those who use the sword will die by the sword. Don’t you realize that I could ask my Father for thousands of angels to protect us, and he would send them instantly? But if I did, how would the Scriptures be fulfilled that describe what must happen now?”“

Matthew‬ ‭26‬:‭52‬-‭54‬ ‭NLT

There are some who like to say that the events preceding and following Jesus crucifixion, as well as the event itself were unknown to him. They muse that he was unaware of his fate, emphasized in his cry ,”my God, why have you forsaken me.” However, nothing could be further from the truth. As we read Matthew, we see that Jesus knew everything. He knew when he would die, how he would die and who would betray him. But most importantly, we see that he believed these things necessary. They were part of God’s plan for him. He was not caught blindsided by the inability of his disciples to follow him. As much as he predicts their failure, he also predicts meeting them afterwords. This context for Jesus’ death is important because it showcases the depth of his willpower. His grace and love for his Father dictated a course of action, and he followed through knowing that the ultimate consequence of such a plan would be glory to God and blessings for all. Our salvation was not imposed upon Christ. It was insisted by him. This is how we should be in our devotion. We ought to be aware and act with intent toward God’s plan, knowing that this will be worth the pain. Pain is inevitable, but meaning is elusive. Let our pain have meaning in him.
