EXODUS‬ ‭25‬:‭8‬-‭9‬ ‭‬‬

”“Have the people of Israel build me a holy sanctuary so I can live among them. You must build this Tabernacle and its furnishings exactly according to the pattern I will show you.“
‭‭

Exodus‬ ‭25‬:‭8‬-‭9‬ ‭NLT‬‬

God is not bound by space or time. Unlike the gods that the Hebrew people had recently experienced, God was not a god of borders. This would have been clear to the Hebrews based upon the 10 plagues that were exacted upon Egypt. Each of these plagues mirrored and bested the power of an Egyptian deity who was limited to specific control of specific things and places. God, through Moses, came from outside of Egypt, and displayed a greater authority than every deity. The importance of building a tabernacle and an Ark was not to contain God. It was to create a surety for the Hebrew people. As demonstrated and acknowledged, they would need a reminder. First would be that God is holy, second that he is with them, and lastly that they have a home. It was a point of grace for a finite people who forget that our god is not finite. The Ark never contained God. Instead he chose to reside within it, to benefit our finite minds and to give our insecurities some stability. This is why liturgy and churches are useful in the faith. They help to strengthen our remembrance of God in a finite world. Yet it is clear that they are also not necessary. They only mirror non corruptible things and our faith shouldn’t be built upon them. Praise God for being willing to give us what we need to function better in our relationship with truths that are larger than us.
