EXODUS‬ ‭8‬:‭22‬-‭23‬ ‭‬‬

”But this time I will spare the region of Goshen, where my people live. No flies will be found there. Then you will know that I am the Lord and that I am present even in the heart of your land. I will make a clear distinction between my people and your people. This miraculous sign will happen tomorrow.’”“

Exodus‬ ‭8‬:‭22‬-‭23‬ ‭NLT‬‬

Amid the backdrop of the plagues of miracles, two miraculous truths emerge in these verses. One is the incredible foolishness of the corrupted image of God in the Pharaoh. Second is the beginning of the distinction between the Hebrew people and the nation of Israel. The first is an incredibly foolish act of free will. Here we see what a hard heart looks like. Certainly God gave Pharaoh choice after choice. Yet he would not worship God as God. One might think that all God need do was present his own distinction as the most powerful of the Gods, but it is untrue. Pharaoh was so defiant that he only cared when he was faced with loss. And so God, as he predicted, would drive him to his ultimate undoing because he was completely corrupt. Even his acquiescence was not true submission. Secondly, is the fact that the Hebrew people were being set apart in these plagues. Yet again, God is diving the distinction between himself and others. He is not merely distinctly different from other so called gods. His people are also distinct and set apart and there is a covenant between them that cannot be broken by pride or arrogance. This was as much for Pharaoh as it was for the Jews. These truths hold a celebrated place in their history today.
