“Then the seventh angel blew his trumpet, and there were loud voices shouting in heaven: “The world has now become the Kingdom of our Lord and of his Christ, and he will reign forever and ever.” The twenty-four elders sitting on their thrones before God fell with their faces to the ground and worshiped him. And they said, “We give thanks to you, Lord God, the Almighty, the one who is and who always was, for now you have assumed your great power and have begun to reign. The nations were filled with wrath, but now the time of your wrath has come. It is time to judge the dead and reward your servants the prophets, as well as your holy people, and all who fear your name, from the least to the greatest. It is time to destroy all who have caused destruction on the earth.” Then, in heaven, the Temple of God was opened and the Ark of his covenant could be seen inside the Temple. Lightning flashed, thunder crashed and roared, and there was an earthquake and a terrible hailstorm.”
Revelation 11:15-19 NLT
It seems telling that the Ark of the covenant be revealed at the seventh trumpet. This has true significance. The Ark wasn’t a mere symbol. In real terms, it was a vessel for God. It was God’s reverse Tower of Babel, and in some ways was a material archetype for Christ himself. The Ark provided a real location where men could meet God. Wherever it was, they could be sure that he was there. Of course, this didn’t serve to limit his presence, but instead to guarantee it. It also contained the staff of Moses and fragments of the ten commandment tablets broken by him. Along with this was Manna, that didn’t rot. Jesus does this as well. He contains the law, though it is no longer useable in its original way. He contains the measuring rod, which gives life after death. And he contains the bread of life that doesn’t spoil. He is known as “God with us,” or Emmanuel. This Ark, was lost and is finally seen in heaven as final judgment looms. It indicates that at judgment, God’s reign is in heaven. His presence is no longer with a creation that rejects him. He is leading the way for all of it, back to his throne room where they will see him seated. The stage to access God has been removed from the earth. The Earth’s time is finished. God is no longer going to access his creation remotely. He will move it all to his home court as the end approaches. God is no longer with his creation. Creation’s hope lies now on whether they are with him.
