“As my vision continued that night, I saw someone like a son of man coming with the clouds of heaven. He approached the Ancient One and was led into his presence. He was given authority, honor, and sovereignty over all the nations of the world, so that people of every race and nation and language would obey him. His rule is eternal—it will never end. His kingdom will never be destroyed.”
Daniel 7:13-14 NLT
The presence of the Son of Man is one of the most significant developments in all of prophetic scripture. Previously, Nebedchednezzar noted that there was a fourth in the fire who looked as if he was a Son of the Gods. Here we are introduced to one who comes from men. The interesting thing about him is that he is coming from the clouds and going up to God. In essence he can freely ascend and descend between earth and heaven. There is an illusion to the angels from Jacob’s visions. We are meant to understand that this is not merely a kingdom but a king. He has the self governing authority to traverse the breadth of creation at his will and has the stamp of approval that was transitory for the other kings. In light of the prideful fourth beast, he is the true king. He lasts forever. This character has already been established in davidic prophecy but we now we begin to see that his role is not merely Jewish in nature. This Jewish messiah is a world conqueror that overshadows and outlasts any type of king that has or will come. As Daniel pondered the reign of Belshazzar and a mounting of great of the kingdom of Medo-Persia, this would be a profound insight at the providence of God and a bastion of hope in the uncertain times.
