DANIEL‬ ‭2‬:‭17‬-‭23‬ ‭‬‬

“Then Daniel went home and told his friends Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah what had happened. He urged them to ask the God of heaven to show them his mercy by telling them the secret, so they would not be executed along with the other wise men of Babylon. That night the secret was revealed to Daniel in a vision. Then Daniel praised the God of heaven. He said, “Praise the name of God forever and ever, for he has all wisdom and power. He controls the course of world events; he removes kings and sets up other kings. He gives wisdom to the wise and knowledge to the scholars. He reveals deep and mysterious things and knows what lies hidden in darkness, though he is surrounded by light. I thank and praise you, God of my ancestors, for you have given me wisdom and strength. You have told me what we asked of you and revealed to us what the king demanded.””

Daniel‬ ‭2‬:‭17‬-‭23‬ ‭NLT‬‬

As we read Daniel, one of the first things that becomes obvious is the efficacy of prayer in the life of a believer. More than this, Daniel makes us aware of the frequency and the method in which we should pray. Firstly, Daniel’s immediate response in trial is seen as a plea for a time to prayer. Then he is seen as making that time, not merely a personal time, but also a corporate time. He involved his allies in coming before God. He then returns to prayer after the dream is revealed. Later his prayer is so well established in his daily living that his enemies plot to kill him using it against him. This gives way for the famous story of Daniel in the lion’s den. This isn’t a trite type of prayer. It is a prayer with a breadth of coverage. Starting with cosmic level praise and moving to the mundane personal, Daniel reaffirms the truth of God’s authority. Later we will see that this isn’t because the answer was favorable. His three friends showed that they were loyal to God beyond punishment. Instead, prayer is a matter of participation in the most important relationship for these men. It was umbilical to them in a time of crisis. It kept them whole and allowed them to continue as God’s people out of his chosen land. As it should be for us as well. Pray without ceasing.
