“But we are not like those who turn away from God to their own destruction. We are the faithful ones, whose souls will be saved.”
Hebrews 10:39 NLT
There is always a choice in the life that we live. We need to decide what we will do with our convictions. The author of hebrews outlines a clear dichotomy. Either we are this, or we are that. Either we turn away from God or we are faithful to him. Those who are faithful will be saved. Those who turn away, turn away to destruction. In this dichotomy, it is clear that it is a matter of choice. Here we see that entry into God’s graces may be free, but the exit of just as free to us as it was to Adam and Eve. It seems that God respects our agency, even after we salvation has come. There must be a continuing orientation toward these graces. We must continue to choose grace. In this, we also find that there is no recourse for the ones who move away from it. There destruction doesn’t fall upon them without warning. It is a product of their choosing. They have chosen to move away from their salvation into a state of decay. Their destruction is not only as secure as their salvation once was, but it a forecasted event. As Christians, it is important that we remember that our relationship with God is not one sided. He opens the door freely, and though he locks out the evil one, he doesn’t lock us in. Staying in his kingdom is our choice. Now that we can choose, we are to choose our salvation everyday, not our destruction.
