“A truly wise person uses few words; a person with understanding is even-tempered. Even fools are thought wise when they keep silent; with their mouths shut, they seem intelligent.”
Proverbs 17:27-28 NLT
There is an ongoing struggle within all human beings to justify our behavior. It is considered a high art to possess the skills to wax poetically about endless philosophies and drone on in written works. Certainly, God as the creator, is the originator of artistic expression. Yet, his purpose in giving that to us was not for self congratulation. It seems that this leads mostly to giving ourselves more praise than we’re due. Perhaps it can be said that a statement in motion stays in motion? We know that words have power. They bring life to imagination and they brought this life to God’s. Yet true wisdom isn’t about displaying power. It is about controlling it. In this vain, speech must be tempered to godly. Solomon notes that the even foolish people appear wise with a closed mouth and silent tongue. Indeed, the longer humans expound upon the contents and context of their own minds, the more their depravity and brokenness shines through. Therefore, we should share our words with decorum and civility. They should never be allowed to run free and rampant in our lives. This is an interesting truth against today’s current virtue and conflation that bravery is speaking freely to those in authority; speaking truth to power.
