PROVERBS‬ ‭16‬:‭1‬-‭9‬ ‬‬

“We can make our own plans, but the Lord gives the right answer. People may be pure in their own eyes, but the Lord examines their motives. Commit your actions to the Lord, and your plans will succeed. The Lord has made everything for his own purposes, even the wicked for a day of disaster. The Lord detests the proud; they will surely be punished. Unfailing love and faithfulness make atonement for sin. By fearing the Lord, people avoid evil. When people’s lives please the Lord, even their enemies are at peace with them. Better to have little, with godliness, than to be rich and dishonest. We can make our plans, but the Lord determines our steps.”

Proverbs‬ ‭16‬:‭1‬-‭9‬ ‭NLT‬‬

Try as we might, we do not have the power to control our life events except minimally. The majority of our control is orchestrated through minor adjustments to our own person. We can incline in one direction or another. We can turn one way or the other. We can focus on the important or unimportant things. Nonetheless, the path of our lives is informed by God. The wise leans into this fact by building his relationship with him. He puts a sail to the wind rather than being tossed to an fro by it. Too many spend their time in this life trying to escape this fact. But those who learn to toss up sails can do great things despite the lack of absolute control. In this way, their control may not be absolute, but it is meaningful. Those who refuse to acclimate ultimately find themselves lost at the whims of the transcendent forces of life that easily dwarf their pride. We should find solace in God’s control. We ought to take refuge in it.
