“A peaceful heart leads to a healthy body; jealousy is like cancer in the bones. Those who oppress the poor insult their Maker, but helping the poor honors him. The wicked are crushed by disaster, but the godly have a refuge when they die. Wisdom is enshrined in an understanding heart; wisdom is not found among fools. Godliness makes a nation great, but sin is a disgrace to any people. A king rejoices in wise servants but is angry with those who disgrace him.”
Proverbs 14:30-35 NLT
Jesus once said that, “it is not what goes into a man that defiles him, but what comes out.” Here Solomon expounds upon that subject with a bit more exampling. He starts off this set of proverbs by speaking to the idea of a heathy body. The idea is that their is a correlation. Of course, Jesus would note that the unhealthiness of the world is due to a heart that is at war with God. This is why it’s easier to perform a miracle than forgive sin. But humans are anthropocentric. It is hard to see outside of our lenses. Sin is, and by extension, a pursuit of folly and ungodly wisdom, is correlated to ails and woes. This can be because of original sin, but in counseling, I have anecdotally found, that their is often a pursuit of folly present when this lack of peace occurs. This is why it’s important to pursue wisdom. On a practical level, it retards the obvious correlation between folly, sin and a lack of peace. We cannot personally undue original sin, but we can stop affiliating with it. Beyond this, accepting Christ’s sacrifice serves to end this enmity in our leaves and produces the “peace that surpasses all understanding.” Many of our people on mental anguish would do well to understand this passage.
