PROVERBS‬ ‭14‬:‭1‬-‭12‬ ‭‬‬

“A wise woman builds her home, but a foolish woman tears it down with her own hands. Those who follow the right path fear the Lord; those who take the wrong path despise him. A fool’s proud talk becomes a rod that beats him, but the words of the wise keep them safe. Without oxen a stable stays clean, but you need a strong ox for a large harvest. An honest witness does not lie; a false witness breathes lies. A mocker seeks wisdom and never finds it, but knowledge comes easily to those with understanding. Stay away from fools, for you won’t find knowledge on their lips. The prudent understand where they are going, but fools deceive themselves. Fools make fun of guilt, but the godly acknowledge it and seek reconciliation. Each heart knows its own bitterness, and no one else can fully share its joy. The house of the wicked will be destroyed, but the tent of the godly will flourish. There is a path before each person that seems right, but it ends in death.”

Proverbs‬ ‭14‬:‭1‬-‭12‬ ‭NLT‬‬

We have seen two women contrasted thus far in Solomon’s writings. One is wisdom personified, and the other is the promiscuous woman. Here we see a third woman. She is the godly woman. Solomon notes that she builds her home. This is in contrast to the idea that a foolish woman destroys her home. This introduces a fourth woman, the fool. In wisdom, there is a level of discipleship. We become who we follow. Wherein we might mistake the machinations of the promiscuous woman, or lady Wisdom as dictating our behavior, we see that we are our own masters. We follow the promiscuous woman into the grave because we see that path as “right,” in our own eyes. In this vain, though Wisdom is transcendent, it is not unfamiliar. Not only can we follow it, but we can reject it, as Eve did. The language in Genesis is as clear. She “saw that the fruit was good and partook.” This served to destroy her home and put her in line with the promiscuous woman. She became promiscuous before God, choosing to fornicate with other ideologies. And she became the fool, enticing her husband into the grave, and shifting blame, rather than confessing and repenting. Thank God for his mercy. As much as wisdom is transcendent, our destruction is still our choice.
