“Fools think their own way is right, but the wise listen to others. A fool is quick-tempered, but a wise person stays calm when insulted. An honest witness tells the truth; a false witness tells lies. Some people make cutting remarks, but the words of the wise bring healing. Truthful words stand the test of time, but lies are soon exposed. Deceit fills hearts that are plotting evil; joy fills hearts that are planning peace! No harm comes to the godly, but the wicked have their fill of trouble. The Lord detests lying lips, but he delights in those who tell the truth. The wise don’t make a show of their knowledge, but fools broadcast their foolishness. Work hard and become a leader; be lazy and become a slave. Worry weighs a person down; an encouraging word cheers a person up. The godly give good advice to their friends; the wicked lead them astray. Lazy people don’t even cook the game they catch, but the diligent make use of everything they find.”
Proverbs 12:15-27 NLT
A Christian’s connection to God is intimately linked with his connection to truth. Because God is the originator and standard of truth, everything that is wisdom will naturally bleed into this connection. You cannot love wisdom and not love truth. You cannot live discipline and not love truth. Therefore, it also stands to reason that true things produce wise things and that use things produce true things. Where one is, there the other is also. Solomon spends a great deal of time on this passage showing obvious truths about behaviors and their connection to wisdom. He outlines the logical status quo by which anyone who thinks they’re wise must act: they must tell the truth. Those who do not result, not only in folly, but show themselves to have become fools. When one lies they are fools. Their effect on others shows them to be fools. Before God, they are fools. Upon insult, they are fools. Over time, they are exposed as fools. This list grows and grows throughout the entirety of Proverbs. Jesus said that what comes out of a man defiles him. This passage certainly foreshadows that truth. We would all do better to say less and fear God than to constantly broadcast our foolishness on social media for likes.
